UMAI MI Restaurant

Full turn-key fit out restaurant project

Overview

Working alongside design house “This is interiors”, we  designed this new venture Chinese fusion restaurant based in  the Eldon Square shopping centre in Newcastle city centre.

We commissioned a bespoke bar area using contrasting  materials, polished brass disks to form the back of the  area and contrasting counter top and slatted timberwork  to finish the look. The client also had an idea to frame out  some stylised images of Chinese ladies that incorporated

their restaurant logo. As we were cladding the walls in burnt  timber we thought it would create a good look if we could  make the frames out of the same materials. Ironically the  factory that produced the burnt timber burned down, so we  had to think on our feet and managed to create the look  ourselves so as not to impact the project programme.

Amongst other challenges, the majority of the catering  equipment came from the client and their Chinese supplier.  Getting the equipment to work and stand up to the UK  regulations was extremely challenging but eventually with  a lot of effort from project Interiors, the designers and the client we made a very tight dead line and the client enjoyed a very successful opening night.
